Short clip from The Reply

A film inspired by Hallie Rubenhold’s biography and social history The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper.

Scenes poetically imagining moments in the lives of five women. In some cases, they are seemingly fatalistic turning points, and in others these women fabricated their own stories, mixing fantasy with reality, and recreating themselves through the force of their personalities.

Precarious living circumstances and homelessness pervaded their lives, some spent time in the Victorian workhouses, where women paid for bed and board by  picking oakum, a kind of rope that was used in ship building.

Each of the five was in some way betrayed, both by the unfair social standards of Victorian England, and within their personal relationships. The Reply and  Just To Say This are both also responses to William Carlos Williams’ poem This Is Just To Say, a cutting metaphor of betrayal.
